About KCSE

KCSE English

English is one of the compulsory languages at KCSE. It is examined through three papers that together test writing, comprehension, grammar and literature.

A candidate's English grade combines all three papers, so no single skill can be neglected. The three papers are:

PaperFocus
Paper 1Functional skills: functional writing, cloze test, oral skills
Paper 2Comprehension, literary appreciation, grammar and language use
Paper 3Creative composition and essays based on set books

Paper 1: Functional Skills

This paper tests practical, real-world English. You may be asked to write functional pieces such as a formal letter, an email, a memo, a report, a speech or minutes, complete a cloze passage, and answer questions on oral skills including pronunciation, stress and etiquette.

Paper 2: Comprehension & Language Use

Paper 2 opens with a comprehension passage, tests literary appreciation through an excerpt (often from a set book or an oral literature item such as a poem or narrative), and examines grammar and correct usage. This is the paper where wide reading and a strong grasp of tenses, agreement and sentence structure pay off directly.

Paper 3: Creative Composition & Set Books

Paper 3 asks you to write a creative composition and essays responding to the prescribed literature set books, usually a play, a novel, an anthology of short stories and an optional set book. Because the set books change from cycle to cycle, always confirm the current list for your exam year and read each title closely, tracking themes, characters and quotable moments.

Revision Tips

Read your set books more than once and keep notes on themes, characters and key quotations. Essay questions reward specific textual evidence, not general summary.

Practise functional writing formats until the layout is automatic; the correct format for a letter, memo or report carries marks on its own.

Grow your vocabulary and tighten your grammar through regular reading and past-paper practice, since accurate language is rewarded across every paper.
