KCSE Sciences
The KCSE sciences are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They make up Group II of the subject groups, and most candidates take at least two of them. Each is examined through a mix of theory and practical papers.
Every science subject is examined through three papers: two theory papers and one practical. The practical is a real laboratory exam sat under exam conditions, so hands-on preparation matters as much as reading notes.
| Paper | Type |
|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Theory |
| Paper 2 | Theory |
| Paper 3 | Practical (laboratory) |
Biology
Biology covers cell biology, classification, nutrition, transport, respiration, excretion, coordination, reproduction, growth and development, genetics, evolution and ecology. The practical tests observation, drawing, and biological reasoning from specimens and data.
Chemistry
Chemistry spans the structure of the atom and bonding, acids, bases and salts, the mole concept and stoichiometry, energy changes, reaction rates, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, and the chemistry of common metals and non-metals. The practical focuses on qualitative analysis, titrations and careful recording.
Physics
Physics covers measurement, mechanics (forces, motion, energy, machines), heat and thermodynamics, waves and sound, light and optics, electricity and magnetism, and elements of modern physics such as the atom and electronics. The practical tests measurement, graph work and analysis.
Revision Tips
Practise the practicals, not just the theory. Time yourself setting up experiments, recording readings to the right precision, plotting graphs, and writing conclusions in the format KNEC expects.
Learn definitions and laws precisely. Science marking schemes often award marks for exact wording, correct units, and stated assumptions.
Work through past papers by topic to spot recurring question styles, then full past papers under time to build exam stamina across all three papers.
