KJSEA Mathematics
Mathematics is a core learning area in Junior School. At Grade 9 it is assessed through a written paper that tests the competencies built up across Grades 7, 8 and 9.
The CBC approach to Mathematics emphasises understanding and application: learners are expected not just to compute, but to reason about problems and apply mathematics to everyday situations. Questions are organised around the syllabus strands.
| Strand | Examples |
|---|---|
| Numbers | Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, rational numbers |
| Algebra | Expressions, equations, inequalities, linear relationships |
| Measurement | Length, area, volume, mass, time, money, rates |
| Geometry | Angles, shapes, constructions, coordinates, transformations |
| Data handling | Collecting, representing and interpreting data; probability |
How It Is Assessed
Mathematics is examined through a national written paper. Beyond the exam, the competency-based approach means classroom tasks and school-based assessment through Junior School also contribute evidence of a learner's mathematical competency.
Revision Tips
Practise applying mathematics to word problems and real-life contexts, not just bare calculations; that is how CBC questions are framed.
Show your working clearly. Setting out each step helps you catch mistakes and demonstrates the reasoning the assessment is looking for.
Revise a little and often across all the strands, and use practice questions to find the topics you need to strengthen before the assessment.
