The SHSAT has two scored sections: ELA and Math. Each section has 50 questions. On a practice test, your raw score is the number of questions you answer correctly in each section. If you're scoring an older practice exam with 57 questions per section, flip the toggle in the calculator above.

For example:

  • ELA: 39 out of 50
  • Math: 41 out of 50

These raw scores are converted into scaled section scores. The ELA scaled score and Math scaled score are then added together to produce a composite score. This composite score is the number used for Specialized High School admissions.

Raw Score vs. Scaled Score

Your raw score is simply how many questions you got right.

Your scaled score is the adjusted score used for SHSAT reporting.

The SHSAT is not scored like a normal percentage test. A student who answers 80% of the questions correctly does not simply receive 80% of the possible score. Raw scores are converted through a non-linear scoring process, which means each additional correct answer is not always worth the same number of points.

In general, points near the very high and very low ends of a section can have a larger effect than points in the middle.

Why This Is an Estimate

No score calculator can guarantee an exact official SHSAT score.

Official SHSAT scoring depends on the test form, yearly scoring process, and, for the digital adaptive SHSAT, the difficulty of the questions a student receives. Because the test is adaptive, two students with the same number of correct answers may not necessarily receive the exact same official score.

This calculator is meant to give a useful estimate based on practice-test performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good SHSAT score?

A good score clears the cutoff for the school you want. In 2025 the cutoffs ran from 496 at The Brooklyn Latin School to 556 at Stuyvesant, out of 700. They shift a few points each year with seats and applicants, so aim above your target school's latest cutoff with room to spare.

How is the SHSAT score calculated?

Each section, ELA and Math, gives you a raw score: the number of questions you got right. That raw score converts to a scaled score from 100 to 350. Add the two sections for a composite between 200 and 700. The composite is the only number used for admissions.

What is the highest possible SHSAT score?

700, from a 350 on ELA and a 350 on Math. The lowest is 200.

Is the SHSAT scored on a curve?

Sort of. The raw-to-scaled conversion isn't a flat rate, and it gets reset each year for difficulty. One more correct answer is worth more near the top and bottom of a section than in the middle.

How accurate is this SHSAT calculator?

It's a solid estimate, not an official score. The DOE keeps its conversion table private, and the digital test is adaptive, so two students who get the same number right can still score differently. This tool uses anchor points from the DOE's sample tests to put you in the right range.
